What are the duties of an information technology specialist?

As an information technology specialist specializing in system engineering, you assist customers and colleagues with their IT equipment such as computers, monitors, mobile devices (tablets, laptops), projectors, printers, etc. as well as the appropriate software, and ensure their problem-free function. You will also design and plan networks and systems for servers, data storage and back-ups, and prepare authorization concepts. You obtain the necessary hardware and software and configure the equipment for users and network. You are responsible for meeting the desired requirements as cost-effectively as possible and long-term. This means that you will be in frequent contact with the various departments. You also carry out maintenance work and are responsible for the problem-free functioning of production and machine tools, if applicable. You also conduct training sessions, for example to explain new features.

Examples of your future tasks:

Clarify expectations with colleagues on the functioning and requirements of IT systems and machines
Advise colleagues on possible IT system solutions
Participate in the planning and development of new environments and solutions in the operational IT landscape
Prepare implementation plan as well as time schedule, budget, and project schedule
Select, procure, configure (set up) user end devices and peripherals, components
Prepare network topology and develop, install, and configure components for infrastructure
Develop, install (incl. server room), configure server systems
Install and set up cloud services, data storage systems, back-up solutions
Prepare and implement authorisation concepts, set up user interfaces
Set up network services, e.g. CMS, interfaces
Configure and commission services that support groupware
Implement measures for data security, data protection and possibly data encryption
Verify and ensure performance, functional safety
Carry out maintenance and repairs, troubleshooting
Document work and tests, prepare operation manuals, train colleagues
